“Bag It” Documentary & Plastics Presentation

The Environmental Issues Committee of the local League of Women Voters will be showing “Bag It,” a documentary about plastics, on Saturday, November 23rd at 6:30 at the Philly Street Playhouse (across from the Artists Hand Gallery). The film will be followed by presentations on three local plastics initiatives and an open discussion. The event is free to the public.

The documentary begins by giving a light-hearted overview of the role of plastics in our daily lives. It tells the story of an average guy who decides to quit using plastic bags at the grocery store. He soon becomes aware of the extensive use of plastics throughout the store, and realizes that this simple decision will end up changing his life. Going beyond the grocery store, the film humorously presents the difficulties of recycling. On a more serious note, it describes the presence of plastics in the oceans and in our bodies.

The presentation of local plastic initiatives will cover:

1) a survey of local Indiana businesses and their use of plastics

2) a research project that tests for plastics in local waterways, and

3) the “Bench Project” in which plastics are collected and re-purposed into a sturdy, poly-lumber outdoor bench for the community.
